The best influencer marketing advice never comes from a report

Think about the last thing that got you fired up about your job this year. Odds are it didn't come from a report. It came from someone who does the job, saying what happened when they tried it.

So we've filled a day with people like that.

Maya Shaff, ŌURA. Leah Walker, Adobe. Georgia Humphries, Stanley 1913. Enara Roy, Halfday. Tyler Vaught, Edelman. Josh Rangel, Ogilvy. Sarah Whittle, ex-Crocs and Duolingo.

And that's just the first wave of speakers.

Return on Influence Festival '26 is a free, virtual day dedicated to influencer marketing. Like any good festival, there are stages. But no mud, no queues, and absolutely no porta-potties.

Sign up today, and the rest of the lineup lands in your inbox first.

You sell a €49 product in Romania. It costs you €14.

Quick math: 65% margin, break-even ROAS 1.53x.

Ads Manager shows 2.2x, so you feel fine.

You are losing money on every order.

Why your break-even ROAS for Meta ads in Europe is wrong

In #124 I gave you the formula: break-even ROAS = 1 / your margin.

The formula is right. What most people put into it is not.

The 1.53x only counts the product.

It forgets three costs that come with every single order:

VAT. If your pixel sends prices with VAT, 21% of your Ads Manager ROAS belongs to the state.

In #130, that alone took a 12.29x account down to 10.16x.

Shipping and fees. The courier, the box, the card fee. Small, every time.

Returns. A few percent, but real money.

What one €49 order leaves you after VAT

Step

Per order

Customer pays

€49.00

After VAT (21%)

€40.50

After product cost

€26.50

After shipping and packaging

€22.00

After payment fees (2%)

€21.02

After returns (3%)

€19.80

That last line is your break-even CPA.

Pay more than €19.80 for a purchase and you lose money.

Break-even ROAS on net revenue: 2.05x.

Break-even ROAS as Ads Manager shows it: 2.47x.

Everything between 1.53x and 2.47x looks like a win.

It is a slow leak.

Check whether your Meta pixel sends VAT

This is the step almost nobody takes.

Some pixels send the price with VAT.

Others send it without.

Your shop setup decides, not Meta.

Step 1: Open one recent order in your shop admin. Note the total with VAT and without.

Step 2: Find that purchase value in Events Manager.

Step 3: Whichever one matches is what your ROAS is built on.

Two minutes. It moves your break-even by the whole VAT rate.

Meta ads fees in Europe: the cost outside "Amount Spent"

There is one more layer, and Ads Manager doesn't show it.

Since July 1, 2026, Meta adds a location fee on ads delivered in six countries:

  • Austria and Turkey: 5%

  • France, Italy and Spain: 3%

  • UK: 2%

It counts where the ad is shown, not where your business sits.

And it lands on your invoice, not in "Amount Spent", so your ROAS column ignores it.

Same €49 product, sold and advertised in Austria (20% VAT): break-even ROAS is 2.43x without the fee. With it: 2.56x.

Not VAT-registered?

Then the VAT on Meta's invoice is a cost too, and you never get it back.

#127 covers every layer.

The free AI skill that does this math for you

So I turned the whole ladder into a skill: das-profit-planner.

You give it your order value, VAT, product cost, shipping, fees, returns, the countries your ads run in, your budget and the profit you want.

It gives you back:

  • what one order really leaves you

  • break-even CPA and ROAS as Ads Manager shows them, VAT and Meta's location fees included

  • the target ROAS for the profit you want

  • a monthly budget table

  • whether your budget can feed Meta's learning phase

That last one stings.

In this example, €600 a month buys about 9 purchases a week at target. Meta's learning phase wants around 50 per ad set.

So: one campaign, one ad set, and judge it on two weeks, not two days.

It also suggests kill and scale lines.

Suggestions only.

They usually work, but every account is different, and the media buyer makes the call, not the AI.

And it never touches your ad account.

Numbers in, numbers out. #112 covers why that line matters.

My Take

ROAS is Meta's number.

Break-even is yours, because only you know what an order costs you.

Calculate it once, with everything in, before you spend the next euro.

TLDR:

  • Break-even in Ads Manager = value the pixel sends / profit per order

  • Pixel sends VAT? Line moves up by the whole VAT rate

  • Meta location fees: Austria, Turkey 5%; France, Italy, Spain 3%; UK 2%

  • Free skill das-profit-planner on GitHub, 6th in the pack
