Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads

Home furniture brand Blu Dot blew up on CTV with help from Roku Ads Manager. Here’s how:

After a test campaign reached 211,000 households and achieved 1,010% ROAS, the brand went all in to promote its annual sales event. It removed age and income constraints to expand reach and shifted budget to custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.

The results speak for themselves. As Blu Dot increased their investment by 10x, ROAS jumped to 2,308% and more page-view conversions surpassed 50,000.

“For CTV campaigns, Roku has been a top performer,” said Claire Folkestad, Paid Media Strategist, Blu Dot. “Comping to our other platforms, we have seen really strong ROAS… and highly efficient CPMs, lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”

Using Roku Ads Manager, the campaign moved from a pilot to a permanent performance engine for the brand.

In 2023, 80% of my week went into Ads Manager.

Interests, lookalikes, audience stacks.

Creative and copy got what was left, about 20%.

In 2026 it's the other way around.

80% goes into angles, creative, copy and training AI to do real work. 20% goes into Ads Manager: Advantage+ setups and refreshing audience segments.

Same agency, same kind of clients. A completely different job.

Why AI is making Meta ads tools a level playing field

Meta has said the quiet part out loud. The goal is a world where you hand over an objective, a budget and a bank account, and it does the rest.

I covered that plan in #123.

On Meta's Q1 2026 earnings call, CFO Susan Li said more than 8 million advertisers, mostly small businesses, now use at least one of Meta's AI creative tools.

Here's the thing. When 8 million advertisers use the same tools, the tools stop being an edge.

Same targeting, same placements, same budget logic.

Soon, the same AI-generated images.

What's left is what you feed the machine, and what you do with what comes back.

The Meta ads skills AI is making worthless

I was good at most of this list.

  • Stacking interests and building lookalike ladders

  • Picking placements and setting bids by hand

  • Splitting a small budget across five ad sets

  • Writing 20 copy variations from scratch

  • Building reports cell by cell in a spreadsheet

None of it is wasted. It's just not your edge anymore.

The Meta ads skills AI makes worth more

These five gain value every year. AI can't do them for you, it can only multiply them.

The last one matters most.

Briefing

AI output is only as good as the context you give it. In #133 I ran the same prompt twice on the same product: without a brand file the output was unusable, with one I'd actually run it.

Same model. The difference was the brief.

Customer research

AI can't interview your customers. It works with what you hand it: reviews, DMs, the exact sentences people use on sales calls.

Whoever collects the best raw material wins.

Offer design

The algorithm finds buyers for a good offer. It can't fix a weak one, which was point one of #134.

Taste

A September 2026 study in Harvard Business Review found AI-generated ads performed worse than human-made ones, even when viewers couldn't tell which was which.

AI now makes ads that look good enough to approve. Someone has to say no, and that's you.

Reading profit (the most important one)

Meta Ads Manager still doesn't show profit. It shows ROAS, CPA and clicks: numbers about the ads.

Profit only shows up in your business numbers: revenue, margin, what's left in the bank. I wrote about that gap in #95: look only at ad metrics and you're judging the ads, not the business.

Someone has to line those two up. Meta's AI can't, because it never sees your margin.

That someone is you. And the more you let Meta optimize, the faster it chases whatever number you hand it, even into a loss, as #130 shows with real numbers.

The mistakes I see freelancers make with AI in Meta ads

Learning the tool instead of the skill. Tools change every quarter. The skills carry over.

Shipping unedited output. Fast and generic is still generic.

Running someone else's AI setup as-is. Including mine.

Why every brand needs its own AI skills

I give away five free Claude skills for Meta ads: a context builder, hook generator, copy generator, design brief writer and static ad scorer.

Use them as a starting point, not a finished setup.

My skills know how I think about Meta ads. They don't know your customer, your margin, your tone of voice, or the three claims your industry is not allowed to make.

Take the pack apart, see how it's built, and build your own for every brand you run. One brand, one context file, one set of skills that actually knows it.

That's the part of the job that compounds.

How to shift your week toward the skills that matter

Step 1: Write down how your hours split this week, Ads Manager versus everything else.

Step 2: Hand one task from the worthless list to automation. Reports go to AI as an export, never from inside the account.

Step 3: Spend the hour you saved on customer research for one brand.

Step 4: Turn what you found into a context file, then into your first custom skill.

The one truth about Meta ads in the AI era

The machine does the buying now. That was never the hard part.

The hard part was always knowing the customer, the offer and the numbers better than anyone else.

AI didn't change that. It just removed everything that used to hide it.

TLDR:

  • 2023: 80% Ads Manager. 2026: 80% angles, creative, AI skills

  • Same Meta AI tools for 8M advertisers, no edge in the buttons

  • Profit first: Meta shows ad metrics, you align them with the business

  • Borrow skill packs, build your own for every brand
